Making Peace With The Past, Letting Go & Forgiving

I dedicate this post to the wonderful woman who gave me life, who’s Birthday it is today. Happy Birthday Mum, I love you.

Some may say that in order to fully recover from our eating disorders, we must first delve into our pasts and find the root cause.

Now I personally don’t quite agree. Don’t get me wrong, I feel it may help you understand it better and the reasons behind your illness but at the end of the day, does it matter why anything happens so long as we are moving in the right direction? Forwards, never back. Focusing on the present.

Then, when you are ready you can look back, if you choose to.

But I do believe in making peace with your past and being able to let go and forgive if you need to. Holding on to what’s been can only hold you back and do more harm than good. I feel it's of upmost importance to release the negatives of things long past.

It’s not easy to do. Sometimes we hold on so tightly to what has been or what could have been that we loose sight of what is and what will be. We can often overlook how far we’ve come, how well we’re doing and all that we’ve achieved.

To live a life full of regrets, in my opinion, is pointless. You cannot change what has been but you can determine what happens next. This is your life and what you do today holds the key to your future….

We have all been hurt. We have all lost love. We have all behaved in manners of which we aren’t proud, but we’re human and we learn. The past cannot hurt you anymore, you will love again (and again) and the person you are today is what counts.

Make peace with your past. Thank it for what it was, what it has given you and what you have learnt.

Let go of old hurts for they hold no power over you anymore. Don’t allow them torment you any longer. Free yourself and make room for the new.

Forgive those that caused you pain… Maybe they did the best that they could at the time or only what they knew. Maybe they didn’t know any better. Or maybe they’re just not worth thinking about anymore. Whatever their reasons, it is now up to them to forgive themselves.

They too cannot harm you anymore.

Some may be easier to forgive, some you may not be able to at all but at least let go.

Use the energy you’ve poured into them towards those who are a part of your life now, those that love you. Those who are a part of your present & your future.

Remember; it is never too late or too early. You are never too young or too old. Today is the perfect day. Today is the only day. Tomorrow will be today.

Live, love, smile. Be healthy and happy. Dance just because you feel like it. Surround yourself with wonderful people. Eat yummy foods. Enjoy this life for it is all we have…

As I say, it’s not easy but it is doable. I’m still working on it daily and yes still struggling yet challenging myself.

But each day I let go a little more, forgive a little easier and focus on the now and present future.

And you too can be free from the tides that may bind you. Hold on to the good memories, the people that count and all that's made you the wonderful person you are today.

It’s time now to focus on you and your life.

With Much Love, smiles and support,

Hanna xxx
